Forging a Battle: Part 1

I was originally going to do a single piece on BattleForge but have got carried away and it was getting very long. As a result so I am posting the experiences of the first day now. The rest will follow, though not necessarily in real time

Since BattleForge is now “Play 4 Free” I thought I would give it a go. The idea is you can play as much as you like but if you want more cards (and as it is a trading card game you probably will) you have to pay for them with real money, you had to pay for extra cards in the retail version but that came with more cards in its starter pack (and still does if you want to buy it that way) than the free version and 3000 points to spend on booster packs or card auctions.


You can either get the free part of the game from their own website or from Steam. If you are in the UK/Japan then the Steam store page will not work for you [1], however if you have Steam installed you can follow this link as I did and it will install regardless of your region. I chose to use the Steam install as it is a very big download so being able to resume is vital when downloading on as poor an internet connection as I have. This does have the downside of showing up in your games list as BattleForge Demo rather than the full game so I leave it up to you to decide where to download from. Both versions are exactly the same and any additional money you spend on them goes strait to the publisher regardless of where you got it.

Once downloaded and installed I find I have to sign up for an EA account. This seems fairly painless [2] and quick to do, but is done on the website rather than in game. When I return to the launcher with my new account the next section lets me pick a server. I pick the Juggernaut server as it has a nice little Union Jack by it (and the stars and stripes so I guess there will be Americans on this server as well). Other options are two servers with a globe I assume means worldwide and one German server. Then I get to the not so quick part, after starting BattleForge and signing in it told me it needed to download 400MB of updates [3], fortunately this seems to resume to a certain extent as it has sensibly been split into smaller files. I can’t really hold updates against them though as it shows that they are still supporting the game [4].

So updating done I am finally ready to play, but 400MB is a lot on my piss poor internet connection so it is getting late. Actually playing the game will have to wait until tomorrow.

[1] EA won’t comment to anyone on why they won’t release their games on Steam in the UK or Japan or why they are so overpriced in Europe, this has been discussed to death in the Steam forums.

[3] It seems the Steam version is very out of date, since writing this I have installed the regular version from the PCGamer DVD after it came through the post and it only needed 20MB of updates.

    I’ve always had an interest in Card Collecting Games, despite never actually playing a proper game. (Aside from two flash games.) It’ll be interesting to see what you experience.

    I remember playing a demo of a game called Star Chamber several years ago, that wasn’t an RTS more like a 4X strategy game, but it used cards for part of the system. Then there’s Etherlords, but that’s more like a traditional CCG game than Battleforge.

    This game seems to have slipped under my radar, I know of it but didn’t realise what it was.
